Upon completing the 5.25-hour Teaching and Learning module you will be able to:
- assess your own beliefs regarding effective teaching;
- analyze certain coaching situations to determine if they promote learning;
- create conditions that promote learning and self-esteem through:
- appropriate consideration of the affective, cognitive and motor dimensions of learning;
- the use of words and methods that relate to an athlete’s preferred learning style;
- a sound organization;
- active supervision; and
- the use of well-formulated feedback offered at the right time and with the right frequency.

Keynote: Sport and Community Development: Learning from the past and building for the future – Jared Kope, viaSport
Description: How do we create vibrant and healthy communities? Does sport have a role? Jared shares both happy and heart-wrenching stories of the power of sport from his work in BC, across Canada, and internationally.
Spoiler alert: Jared does believe sport does have a role and it is YOU (ie the coaches, parents, administrators, caregivers, community champions, teachers, grandparents, neighbours) who make the difference.
Facilitator Bio: Jared grew up in small-town Alberta playing every sport he could, which led to competing on the track and field team for the University of Alberta and his passion for creating vibrant communities through sport and physical activity. Professionally, Jared is the Director of Provincial Activation at viaSport BC. Before his role at viaSport, he was the Executive Director at PacificSport Fraser Valley.
Jared has also worked across Canada, and internationally, developing and implementing play and sport programs with organizations such as the Mozambique National Olympic Committee, Right To Play and Play Around the World. He holds a Master of Arts in Human Kinetics, a Bachelor of Physical Education, and a Diploma in Sport Policy.
Concussion: Current Understanding, Guidelines, and Recommendations – Rebecca Margel, Jasper Physiotherapy
Description: This session will provide a summary of the latest knowledge and evidence surrounding concussion. Prevention, identification, and management will be discussed in addition to rest and return to school/play recommendations.
Facilitator Bio: Rebecca Margel holds a Master’s of Physiotherapy from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland as well as an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Ottawa. Rebecca uses an evidence-based, biopsychosocial approach to getting you back to the activities you love. She loves to educate, use exercise as medicine, and manual therapy/IMS to help you get the most out of your rehab. Rebecca is passionate about empowering her patients understand their bodies and giving them the tools to improve their function, mobility, and sport performance. At the end of the day, exercise is medicine. Rebecca treats a diversity of people from a spectrum of athletic and cultural backgrounds, of all ages and abilities. From 5k runners to professional rodeo athletes and professional musicians, Rebecca uses critical thinking to help you prevent injury and rehabilitate your body.
