Lady Grey Elementary School is a recipient of a Columbia Basin Trust Grant intended to increase Physical Literacy in youth. This is a whole school initiative emerging from a desire to offer increasing opportunities for students to increase their skills, confidence and engagement with physical activities in our community. With support from our Health Promoting Schools Coordinator, Jennifer Turner, we undertook applying for a grant in the spring of 2018. Upon successful acquisition of the grant, Lady Grey began our “Let’s Get Physical in 40” sessions this past fall.
On Fridays from 11:15 – 12, all students in our school attend 40 minutes of physical activity either at school or in the community. With the support of numerous community experts, we are able to offer a plethora of options. We have students curling, climbing, dancing, playing hockey and volleyball, as well as practicing yoga and martial arts – to name a few. Using a pre and post assessment, we are gathering data on student self-concept in relation to the fundamental movement skills. As we complete the first of three 5-6 week sessions, early indicators are showing enthusiasm from both our school community as well as our wide range of community supporters.
